Ketchikan Shipyard Secures Contract for State Ferry Construction

The construction contract for two new Alaska Marine Highway System ferries has been awarded to Vigor, at the Ketchikan Alaska Shipyard. Over the last seven years, the Alaska State Legislature has approved $120 million in state funds for ferry replacement which will now be allocated for the construction of two new ships. This project is de-federalized meaning that no federal funds will be used to pay for construction. By doing this, the state avoided the federal procurement rules that would have likely resulted in the ferries being built in a shipyard out of state.

The ferries will be 280- feet long, seat up to 300 passengers and carry 53 standard vehicles. Each ferry will feature bow and stern doors for quicker loading and unloading, fully enclosed car decks and controllable pitch propellers to maximize maneuverability and efficiency. A modified hull design will greatly improve traveler comfort during rough weather.

The State was able to incorporate public input into the final design of the ferries while keeping the project within budget. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2018.
