Alaska Marine Highway reduces service to Prince Rupert, Canada to once per week; The Alaska Marine Highway has reduced twice weekly ferry service into Prince Rupert from Southeast Alaska ports to once per week for this winter. The M/V Taku, 352 feet overall, has space for 69 vehicles and the car deck has been full during recent voyages into the Alaska Ferry's only Canadian port.

The M/V Taku now provides extra service to the Inside Passage communities of Sitka, Kake and Hoonah with time saved by reducing service to Prince Rupert.

The vessel was built by Puget Sound Bridge & Dry Dock Company of Seattle and began service in 1963. Renovated in 1981, the vessel operates at a service speed of 16.5 knots. It can carry 370 passengers, and has 9 four-berth, and 35 two-berth cabins. Passenger services include a cafeteria, gift shop, cocktail lounge, solarium and forward observation lounge. The M/V Taku provides service up the Inside Passage as far as Haines. Alaska residents know when the Taku is coming by when they feel and hear the distinctive sound of the propeller shaft.
